Years 7, 8 and 9

When students arrive in Year 7 they take part in a “Intro to PE @KES” unit where students take part in a number of different sports and are set on ability in single sex teaching groups. In year 7, 8 and 9, throughout the year the students will cover a range of different sports and concept where they will follow a eight lesson rotation system. These sports include: netball, hockey, fitness, football, rounders, dance, swimming/lifesaving, badminton, rugby, basketball, tennis, athletics, cricket, OAA and gymnastics. Students will cover at least 8 of these throughout the year. During each of these sports the students experience skill and knowledge development, where they will learn key concepts such as performing, team work, leadership, applying tactics and how to lead a healthy lifestyle.

At KS3 students are assessed through the Head, Heart and Hand approach.

Years 10 and 11

All students take part in core PE which involves three lessons a fortnight. Our aim is to equip students with the knowledge, confidence and skill set to take part in regular physical activity, in order to live a healthy lifestyle when they leave KES. Within lessons, we aim to enthuse and encourage students to participate in a range of sports, therefore students are given the choice of which activities they would like to participate in each lesson.  These activities range from: football, netball, trampoline, fitness, badminton, hockey, rounders, table tennis, dance, water polo etc. Within the lessons we work on developing students’ knowledge and skills around performing, leading, officiating and leading a healthy active lifestyle.

Those students who choose GCSE PE have an additional six lessons to the core PE. These students follow the AQA exam board which covers a variety of topics such as: anatomy and physiology, biomechanics and sports psychology. The course is 60% theory and 40% practical. Within the theory the students will sit two 75 minute examinations at the end of Year 11. Students will also be assessed in three practical sports where at least one of these sports needs to be a team game and one needs to be an individual sport.

Years 12 and 13

Students have the option of A level PE and Level 3 Cambridge Technical in Sport and Physical Activity. Those students who choose Level 3 Cambridge Technical in Sport and Physical Activity have the choice to choose the Extended Certificate or Diploma award. Both of these are covered over two years. Extended certificate students will sit two exams and three coursework units. These are Sports coaching and leadership, Organising a sports event and Sports injuries and rehabilitation. The Diploma students will also follow this as well as one additional exam and five units. These are Performance Analysis, Physical activity for specific groups, Practical skills, Sports psychology and Health and fitness testing.

Students who choose A level PE will follow the OCR exam board. The students will cover a variety of areas including: Anatomy and Physiology, Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics, Skill Acquisition, Sport Psychology and Sport and Society.

Extra curricular

Beyond the lesson, we aim to provide students with the opportunity to further develop skills and fitness and create opportunities and experiences that they would not otherwise have. To do this we provide a wide range of extra-curricular clubs from a social level to a competitive level. Our extra-curricular offer is free and non-selective so all students have the opportunity to participate.
