Welcome to KES Sixth Form
At KES our students are at the centre of all that we do - helping them to achieve their ‘Personal Best’ in every aspect of Sixth Form life is what drives us. Our Sixth Form is open to all, regardless of ability. We are confident that we run courses that suit a wide range of abilities and aspirations and aim to help all students develop the skills and mentality to be independent, proactive and resilient.

We are extremely proud of the achievements of Connor Lano in Year 12 as he recently competed in the Armada Cup Diving Competition in Plymouth where he achieved Gold in the Synchronised 3M Springboard with Todd a former KES student. This has led to Connor being selected for the 8 Nations event representing Great Britain at the end of March, followed by the Elite championships in Birmingham in April. He will then be off to California at the end of May for the Mission Viejo representing England. Connor was in Leeds last weekend in the G Star diving event where he achieved Gold in the individual 3M Springboard.
We wish Connor the very best of luck with his competitions and look forward to seeing many more medals in the future!

We are delighted to announce the results of our recent Ofsted Inspection, which took place at the end of January 2024.
Inspectors found KES to be ‘GOOD’ in all areas, with two of the areas, Personal Development and Leadership and Management, showing elements of outstanding practice.
The school was praised for its “well-designed curriculum” and its ambition “for all pupils to be successful”.
Our students said they “value and enjoy school”, are “happy and safe” and “take pride in their learning”. They also praised “the strong support they get from leaders and staff”.
The Inspectors noted that students were “polite and respectful” and that “they behave well throughout the day”, and that the school has “high expectations for behaviour”.
Inspectors found “Students in the Sixth Form learn a wide range of courses” and “are good role models and get involved in school life”.
Students with Special educational needs and/or disabilities “are accurately identified” and “Staff, including in the Sixth Form, are well-trained in how to support pupils with SEND” and “these pupils access the curriculum and produce high-quality work”.
The Governing Body and Senior Leaders are extremely happy to receive recognition for the hard work of our staff and students, considering the significant challenges that we have had over the past four years, and we are sure you will join us in congratulating our school community.

Our Year 13 Health and Social Care students were invited to Broomhills Care Home on Tuesday 13th February to receive an informative talk on Dementia to raise awareness and to encourage our students to become Dementia friends.
The students, accompanied by Mrs Mayo, spent the morning interacting with residents and staff, learning valuable information to assist them with their course and to understand what it means to live with Dementia. Once the talk was finished the students took part in a pancake race against the residents and spent time talking and listening to their life experiences over a well-deserved cup of tea.

We were pleased to welcome Steve from Learning Performance who visited our Sixth form yesterday, to talk to our students about preparing for their exams and effective strategies for memory recall and revision. The students enjoyed his energetic workshop and we wish our Year 13 students the very best of luck with their forthcoming PPE's after half term.

This morning our Head Girl Niamh, Deputy Head Girl Kira and Associate Rhianna joined the Year 12 assembly to share their experiences of being a member of the leadership team. We are looking forward to receiving applications from Year 12 in the next couple of weeks and students will then be invited for an interview. We wish our applicants the best of luck.

Last week 20 A Level Psychology students enjoyed a trip to the Freud Museum in London. The house was where the founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud spent the last year of his life after fleeing the Nazis from Austria. The students took part in a workshop led by Stefan Marianski, Education Manager of the museum, about the curious case of 'Little Hans' one of Freud's best known case studies. There was time for the students to independently explore the house which involved interacting with his couch!

Yesterday as part of our PHSE programme, we welcomed Rutendo from Brook Southend to talk to our Sixth Form about the sexual health services they offer. They provide free and confidential support with contraception, pregnancy testing and STI testing. Students were able to talk to her afterwards and take away some goodies.

On Friday, we attended the Holocaust Memorial event at Rayleigh Arts Centre and listened to Andrew White giving a powerful talk about his mother’s journey through the Second World War. We heard an inspirational account of how Lucy White survived two Nazi concentration camps and two slave labour camps before being liberated by the British Army and living a fulfilled life in the UK. Afterwards members of our leadership team laid a flower at the memorial.

We take immense pride in our Year 13 students Molly, Kira and Sam, who recently participated in the ESU second round at King Edward VI Grammar School on January 18th. They engaged in a debate against The Brentwood School, discussing the topic of whether prisoners should have the right to vote. Despite not advancing to the next round, our team received commendation from the judges for their strong performance. The judges noted the robustness of their lines of argument and the clear structure in their speeches. Congratulations to our three orators for competing at a high level in our inaugural year of running the debate club.

We were pleased to invite Ed and Michael from Wize Up Jack Petchey to our Sixth Form yesterday to talk to our Year 13's about Budgeting Personal Finances and How to Earn Extra Money. Michael’s talk was very informative about how to make a budgeting plan for income and expenditure for now and the future and how to be creative and earn extra money.

On Tuesday, some of our students visited Broomhills Care Home in Stambridge.
The Students took gifts and sang Christmas songs to spread some Christmas Cheer!
Year 13s went as part of their Health and Social Course, Year 8, 9, 11, 12 and 13 went as part of the choir as well as guitar player Ben Y12.
The residents and staff were all really complimentary about our students and how lovely they all were.

Congratulations to this year's winners of the Jack Petchey Awards. The award ceremony was held on Monday evening where our staff and students proudly collected their awards from the Chairman of Rochford Council, Councillor Jack Lawmon. We are always very proud of our students' achievements and for them to be recognised outside of school.

On Friday 1st December former student Rob came in to chat about physics with a small group of Year 12 and 13 students. Topics included studying physics at university, string theory and meeting Stephen Hawking. Rob is working on his PhD so we are grateful to him for giving up his time to come back and see us.

The King Edmund School debate team are through to the second round of the ESU Schools Mace Competition. The team of year 13 students, Sam, Molly and Kira debated the motion, "This House Would broadcast court cases in the British justice system." against St Bernard's High School. Two schools were successful on the evening and the KES team go forward along with Southend High School for Boys. The two judges were extremely complimentary in their feedback to the group and said that that the team "convinced their audience and brought the motion to life" as well as having "great arguments that demonstrated logic and evidence whilst being presented with creativity". We wish our team the very best for their next round.

On Sunday our Head Boy Billy and Deputy Head Girl Fran, accompanied by Head of Sixth Form Mrs Ilett, represented our School and Sixth Form at the Remembrance Service held at St Mary’s Church in Rochford. It was a lovely service and our students laid the wreath to remember those who died serving our Armed Forces
