Year 10

Media Studies GCSE is an exciting and challenging course. In Year 10 students will study different media forms such as film posters, magazine covers, advertisements or newspapers. They will learn to use media language to analyse how products, news and media are represented. They will also study different media industries such as film, newspapers and videogames. Their set products include James Bond posters, Pokémon Go, The Sun and The Guardian. They will also create their own media product from a given brief such as a magazine article, magazine cover or advertisement.

Year 11

In Year 11, students study media theory and the contexts of television and music video production. They will carry out a comparison of the crime dramas ‘Luther’ and ‘The Sweeney’ and study the evolution of music videos. There is time to revise all components in the lead up to the final exams.

Year 12 and 13

The A Level Media Studies course from Eduqas features a number of contemporary topics that learners will enjoy. During the course they will study all of the following media forms: music videos; video games; advertising; newspapers; magazines; film and television. They will acquire knowledge and understanding of media language, representation, industry and audiences as well as being able to create and manipulate media forms to suit different briefs. The linear course features two examinations, each worth 35% of the final A Level. Component 1: Media Products, Industries and Audiences is 2 hours 15 minutes in length; whereas Component 2: Media Forms and Products in Depth is 2 hours and 30 minutes in length. Both examinations assess media language, representation, media industries, audiences and media contexts. The final 30% of the qualification is non-examined assessment: Cross Media Production where students will respond to a brief in two different media forms.
