PSHE and SRE
Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) and Sex and Relationship Education (SRE) is a planned, developmental programme of learning designed to help learners develop the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives, now and in the future.
It deals with real life issues which affect children and young people, their families and their communities, and engages with the social and economic realities of their lives, experiences and attitudes.
PSHE and SRE encourages students to be enterprising and supports them in making effective transitions, in positive learning and in career choices as well as in managing their finances effectively. It also enables children and young people to reflect on and clarify their own values and attitudes. They explore the complex and sometimes conflicting range of values and attitudes they encounter now and in the future.
Topics covered at Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 include: drugs and alcohol education, emotional health and wellbeing, sex and relationship education (SRE), nutrition and physical activity, personal finance, safety, careers education and work-related learning.
There is no statutory requirement for end of key stage assessment in PSHE. Due to the nature of the subject, much of the class work is discussion based or centred around group work activities.
As well as being taught discrete PSHE lessons, the PSHE curriculum is also complimented with Flexi Day activities, theatre productions, workshops and guest speakers.
Statement of intent
At The King Edmund School, we understand the importance of educating pupils about sex, relationships and their health, for them to make responsible and well-informed decisions in their lives.
The teaching of SRE and health education can help to prepare pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. It allows us to promote the spiritual, moral, social, cultural, mental and physical development of students at school and in the wider society.
We have an obligation to provide students with high-quality, evidence and age-appropriate teaching of these subjects. This policy outlines how the school’s SRE and health education curriculum will be organised and delivered, to ensure it meets the needs of all students.
