D.E.A.R. stands for "Drop Everything and Read," a celebration of reading designed to remind our students to make reading a priority activity in their lives.
The simple idea is to promote the importance of literacy and to spread the joy of reading for pleasure by having all students and staff read at the same time on the same day, every week. Work is put down, computer screens are turned off, and everyone is encouraged to pick up a fiction book to read quietly.
Our weekly D.E.A.R. program, which launched at the start of November, provides students with much more than a just-sit-there-and-read experience. It gives students time to read what they want to read, share what they've read, and receive the support they need for further reading explorations and reflections. Weekly reading sessions last twenty minutes and are followed by up in tutor time in which students can write in their reading response logs/ book reviews. When a student completes a book, he or she can speak with the teacher to discuss the book and share his or her reading log.
